IIT Bombay

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay plays a leading role in technological manpower development.

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB), set up by an Act of Parliament, was established in 1958, at Powai, a northern suburb of Mumbai. Today the Institute is recognized as one of the centers of academic excellence in the country. Over the years, there has been dynamic progress at IIT Bombay in all academic and research activities and a parallel improvement in facilities and infrastructure, to keep it on par with the best institutions in the world. Institutes in positions of excellence grow with time. The ideas and ideals on which such institutes are built evolve and change with national aspirations, national perspectives and trends worldwide. IIT Bombay, too, is one such institution. The Institute cherishes the hope that its graduates will be the leaders of tomorrow. Their education is patterned with this in view. Thus in the engineering curriculum, besides the professional courses, there is a strong emphasis on acquiring a thorough grounding in the basic sciences of mathematics, physics and chemistry and a reasonable knowledge in subjects like economics, english, philosophy and social sciences belonging to the Humanities and Social Science. The emphasis on the basic sciences removes to some extent the fear of rapid obsolescence, while studies in the Humanities help the students to interact more positively with the society in which they live. Besides making available facilities for higher education, training and research in various fields of engineering and technology, the Institute contributes to the industrial development and economic growth of the country by preparing a cadre of engineers and scientists, who provide both man power and support R&D work for industries. IIT Bombay plays a leading role in technological manpower development and has research programs comparable to the best in the world. The admission to its various undergraduate and graduate programs is competitive and can be achieved through one of the following Tests:
  • JEE
  • JAM The admissions to the Undergraduate Programs at these institutions for all Indian and Foreign nationals are made through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). Admission to Post Graduate Programs is done through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) which is an all-India examination administered and conducted in eight zones across the country jointly by the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). Each institute has well-equipped modern laboratories, state-of-the-art computer network and well stocked technical library. Teaching methods rely on direct personal contact between the teachers and the students, and the use of traditional and modern instructional techniques. Students live in a pleasant and intellectually stimulating environment with people having similar goals and aspirations, which is an exciting and unique experience. The Institute on average admits 500 candidates for the undergraduate program through Joint Entrance Exam (JEE), 100 candidates for M.Sc. programs, 550 candidates for different postgraduate programs and 110 for PhD programs every year. IITB's programs and courses are designed to prepare you with specialized skills and training so that you will be ready to enter your field of interest. Credit-based academic programs offer flexibility to students to progress at their own pace. A minimum level of performance is necessary for satisfactory progress. The medium of instruction is English.
