Kobe University is a lively and cosmopolitan campus with 1,000 international students from over 60 countries.

Kobe University is one of the oldest and leading universities in Japan, top rated for both research and teaching. Kobe's seven research groups are designated as the International Centers of Excellence and five educational programs as "Good Practices" by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology. This strong academic quality and tradition is proved by the fact that all faculties and schools, from Humanities, to Social Sciences, to Natural Sciences and Bio-Medical Sciences, have doctoral programs at world-class standard. Today Kobe University enrolls more than 4,500 postgraduate students along with 13,000 undergraduate students. Kobe University, working in a spirit of integrity, freedom, and cooperation in keeping with its open and cosmopolitan culture and environs, aims to contribute to the global community through the creation of knowledge founded on universal values and the fostering of rich understanding and strong leadership skills. Kobe University strives to achieve continuing international recognition as an institution for its outstanding work in designated core research areas founded on traditional disciplines and incorporating newly created inter-disciplinary initiatives. In order to help students realize their individual goals, become responsible members of society, and develop to their full potential, Kobe University adopts as its basic educational principle the provision of education which emphasizes individuality and diversity while respecting the independence and autonomy of each student. The Kobe University is a lively and cosmopolitan campus with 1,000 international students from over 60 countries and the number of foreign institutions with academic exchange agreements exceeds 180. The global links are strengthened further by the establishment of the European Union Institute in Japan, Kansai (EUIJ, Kansai) on campus, funded by the European Union in 2005, in collaboration with Osaka University and Kwansei Gakuin University. The EUIJ, Kansai is expected to foster mutual understanding between the European Union and Japan through both teaching and research on the EU. The University is situated in the city of Kobe, one of the biggest cities in Japan. The well-developed rail network makes it easy to travel to other big cities such as Osaka and Kyoto within an hour and even to Tokyo in under 3 hours. The Kansai International Airport is a one-hour drive from the University and has flights to major cities both in and outside Japan. Kobe University Library has collected about 3,400,000 bibliographical materials. The Library is comprised of General Library and 9 branches divided in accordance with subjects. Each library provides a wide range of books and journals to the students and staff to promote their education and assist their research. The libraries also collect audio-visual and CD-ROM materials to complement these written materials. Computerization of the library system in cooperation with the Information Science and Technology Center and the establishment of networks with non-university institutions, such as the National Institute of Informatics, is extending the library network, helping to provide a better service for all users. The International Student Center offers Japanese language courses. The eligible students are limited to those who have been permitted to enter Kobe University. Students who wish to enroll in one of these courses are required to take the placement test at the beginning of the term in which they wish to enroll.
