Chemical Engineering Degrees

An education in Chemical Engineering is a study integrating engineering and molecular sciences. Chemical Engineering can be the design, operation, and construction of machines and the manufacturing plants where they operate which perform chemical reactions to solve practical problems or make useful products. In this way, Chemical Engineering effects the entire planning and controlling of cost in the production chain.

Material engineering is a type of chemical engineering which involves working with all classes of materials: electronic materials, ceramics, metals, biomaterials – the list goes on and on. Students enrolled in a Material Engineering education study the structure, properties, and performance of various materials, and how to work with them in various conditions depending on pressure or temperature.

HAN University of Applied Sciences is one of the Netherlands' fastest growing universities and offers a variety of engineering programs, including automotive engineering, control systems engineering, and automotive systems engineering.

HAN's programs are set in an inspiring, entrepreneurial and innovative environment designed to meet individual needs and foster diverse skills and learning styles.

Chemical/ Material Engineering stone

More on Chemical Engineering

The position of a chemical engineer can be considered that of a ’universal engineer’ because chemical engineering is such a broad scientific and technical field. This occupation involves planning and operating facilities, and inventing new, more efficient processes. Chemical engineering includes not only chemistry, but also mathematics, physics, and biology.

Three physical laws provide the basis for chemical engineering:

  • Conservation of momentum
  • Conservation of mass
  • Conservation of energy

The development of paper, foods, plastics and fertilizers, as well as developments in microelectronics, environmental solutions, biotechnology, and medicine can be attributed to chemical engineering. The work of a chemical engineer can also involve devising ways to convert one material into another, more useful form, or to make products from raw materials – much like the role of a material engineer.

More on Material engineering

Material engineering is an interdisciplinary field which applies fundamental knowledge of the properties and structure of matter to the development of new materials.

Material engineering integrates physical and life sciences with economics and mathematics in converting raw materials or chemicals into more valuable or useful forms. To create these materials, material engineers use various technologies such as electron microscopes or 1000-ton presses. Computational models also play a vital role in creating virtual components or materials.

Educational Courses in Chemical/ Material Engineering

Chemical engineering significantly evolved over the last several decades; however, the core education curriculum has remained primarily the same, with a heavy focus on chemistry, math, physics, engineering, environmental sciences, and materials.

Educational courses in materials engineering concentrate on the study of what things are made out of, whether plastic, Gortex, cotton, etc. Math and science are used to study metals, ceramics, polymers (glass, plastic, rubber), or other materials.

There are a variety of study options available worldwide within Chemical/ Material Engineering:

Bachelor degree in Chemical/ Material Engineering

Master’s degree in Chemical/ Material Engineering

Doctorate/ PhD in Chemical/ Material Engineering

Careers in Chemical/ Material Engineering

A career in chemical engineering involves the development and production of various products and specialty chemicals. This may include materials used for environmental, military, space, or electronic applications such as pharmaceuticals, adhesives, ultra-strong fibers, and prosthetics.

A material engineer is involved in the development and implementation of various materials. The role of a material engineer is crucial to such industries as industrialization, military, transportation, and construction.
