Once a small Gallic village, the wider metropolitan area of Grenoble now hosts 650,000 inhabitants, nearly 10% of them students. It is easy to see why native and international students alike would choose to live here. Asides from the breathtaking setting and urban dynamism, the city exists at the cutting edge of innovation and is home to a slew of research, technology and science industries.

Art and culture: The Musée de Grenoble provides a grand tour of Western art within a minimalist, light-filled space that creates a serene atmosphere ideal for exploring the collections. The Musée Dauphinois is another cultural gem – this historical and archaeological museum chronicles the history of the Dauphiné highlands since 1906 and is housed within a richly decorated baroque-style convent.

Historical sites: Looming over Grenoble, La Bastille is the city’s most prominent landmark. This massive 18th century fortress rewards those who undertake the hour-long hike with breathtaking views of the surrounding massifs. Another of the city’s prize attractions is the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Grenoble – this 13th century church commands the ancient district of Grenoble-Vienne and houses some remarkable Renaissance art.

Outdoors: Situated among the looming massifs of the French Alps, you’d be crazy not to explore the surrounding outdoors of Grenoble. 820 meters of marked trails sprawl from the city to the surrounding hills, valleys and forests, while the nearest ski stations of Autrans, Chamrousse and 7 Laux are around a 45-minute drive from Grenoble.
