Why study an international business degree abroad?

Because of the increase of globalization, it is more important than ever to approach business with an international perspective. After all, the way consumers act in China or France or Brazil (or any other country!) are often quite different from each other. And to get ahead in the business world, smart executives should have a view of the global landscape and its major players. Studying international business abroad could be a great way for you to dive head-first into the global business arena. Whether you’re interested in marketing, human resources, sales, or business law--an international business degree will provide you with the tools to do careers where critical thinking and analysis, as well as communication, is paramount.

Studying international business abroad could lead to many exciting careers, including but not limited to:

  • Marketing Executive
  • Director of Sales
  • International Trader
  • Consultant
  • Human Resources Manager
  • Economist
  • Financial Analyst
  • Stock Broker

What are the prerequisites for studying international business abroad?

If you’re interested in pursuing a bachelor’s degree in international business, the only prerequisite you’ll likely need is a strong academic high school background. The application process might include an interview as well. While likely not required, you will probably find it useful to have a solid foundation in math, statistics, economics, and writing.

If you’re applying to a master’s program, you will need a bachelor’s degree, but it doesn’t have to be in business. Like bachelor’s programs, you will likely have an interview with the admissions committee. While most programs don’t have formal prerequisites, you should have a background in basic business principles. Some master’s programs will require you to take a standardized test like the GMAT. Other programs will require or recommend that you have relevant work experience. As all programs differ, be sure to take a look at the formal prerequisites before applying!

Because international business is an incredibly broad field, what you’ll learn will vary based on your program and its specific concentration. Some programs will focus on hospitality; some will have an emphasis on finance and banking. Regardless of your program’s concentration, expect courses that are writing-intensive. After all, excellent communication is absolutely crucial to conducting international business. In fact, you may even be required to learn a second language. International business tends to be conducted in English, but many programs also prioritize second language fluency, depending on the values of your program.

Some examples of courses may include, but are not limited to:

  • International political economy
  • Global marketing
  • International transport & logistics
  • Legal environment of business
  • Global strategic planning
  • International human resources
  • Organizational sustainability
  • International finance

Many international business degrees also require, or at least highly recommend, doing an internship in the field. Most programs have extensive career centers that will help place you into a position that you’ll find worthwhile given your specific interests. Not only are these internships great experience, but they could give you a leg-up when it comes to applying to jobs after graduating your program.
