Information Technology

Information technology (IT) degrees vary in focus and depth, whether gaming technology or business IT, software development or engineering technology. A bachelors degree in information technology, for instance, generally requires 3 to 5 years of study and concentrates on computers and technology, with a focus on the business and communication applications of computing. Students enrolled in a computer science education program are more likely to cover information science- and management-related subjects.

Study of Computer Science

Originating in the 1960s, computer science is one of the major areas of study within IT/ Technology education, and is made up of the theoretical foundations of information and computation and their implementation and application to computer systems.

There are many sub-fields within computer science. Some emphasize the computation of specific results (such as computer graphics), while others focus on computational problems (such as computational complexity theory). Still, others focus on the challenges in implementing computations. For example, programming language theory studies approaches to describing computations, while computer programming applies specific programming languages to solve specific computational problems.

Careers in IT / Technology

Organizations in both the public and private sectors rely heavily on IT/ technology infrastructure. Modern technology and knowledge about languages, culture and organizations combine to make IT-professions exciting positions that merge the development of people and technology.

Upon completion of an IT/ technology education, a variety of IT professions are available within programming, database administration, network specializing, software professions, and internet / web design. Senior career roles include project management, IT-strategy, and IT-security. IT/ techology professionals work in industries such as multimedia, telecommunications, computer networks, computer network security, business applications, and knowledge content management.
