Due to the fact that it is surrounded by Germany, France, Italy, Austria and Liechtenstein, the city of Montreux has a varied mix of cultures and languages. A large percentage of the population speak German, while other parts speak French and Italian. Sights Not to Miss in Montreux

  1. Chateau de Chillon is a historic castle and Montreux’s most visited location on the small island in Lake Geneva. This castle was originally owned by the House of Savoy, one of the oldest ruling families of Italy. The castle houses several medieval legends and Gothic dungeons.
  2. Montreux Jazz festival is the event of the summer in Montreux and one of the most international music festivals. Initially started as a jazz-only festival, it has since broadened its musical horizons into other music genres as well. The festival generally runs for two weeks and over the years has featured artists like Miles Davis, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald as well as Pink Floyd, Deep Purple and BB King.
  3. The 3.5 kilometer promenade between Clarens and the Chateau de Chillon is a wash with blossoms during springtime. The promenade is most popular and highly recommended for its views of Lake Geneva and Chillon’s reflection in Lake Geneva.
  4. Queen: The studio experience - aimed for die hard fans and aficionados of the rock band Queen. Held at Montreux Mountains Studios, there is plenty of memorabilia as well as a tour of the original sound studio where the lead singer, Freddie Mercury recorded his last songs.
  5. Montreux Noel - not a specific location but the city decked in winter decoration is a sight for all to experience. Montreux in preparation for the winter has no lack of medieval markets and Christmas decorations making it a fairytale Christmas destination. The nearby town of Caux also transforms itself into an authentic and enchanting portrayal of a Christmas village.
