Program description

A Cross between Journalism, Media, and Culture

journalism programTechnologies that enable real time communications across national borders are changing the character of professional journalism. In the age of social media, journalism is seeing new challenges and new forms of complexity.

The B.A. in Journalism and Communication program combines an education in politics and cultural studies with modern journalistic skills and practices.

As a result, students become specialists in media and news literacy, and build proficiency in reporting and publicity with an acute understanding of domestic and foreign policy, society, and culture.

The program emphasizes media environments where technologies, languages and cultures converge as students complete courses that involve individual and teamwork exercises in reporting, editorial design, video editing and production, digital photography, and web content development.

Graduates of the B.A. in Journalism and Communications program can expect to:

  • Excel in print and web media, including web page development, video editing, podcasting, and digital photography as well as reporting, editorial design, and in-depth investigative journalism
  • Have actionable knowledge of journalism’s role in democratic governments, societies, cultures, and the arts
  • Be familiar with multiple editorial and reporting processes and strategies
  • Apply advanced English speaking and writing skills for public audiences from various cultural backgrounds
  • Understand and uphold civic responsibility, identify social and ethical problems, and resourcefully structure debate with respect to civil society, colleagues, and opponents

The B.A. program in Journalism and Communications prepares our students for work in both the traditional press and the electronic English (and other) language media, in radio, TV programming and video, and in the wider area of marketing and public relations. Students will be well qualified to work in government and international organizations as well as in public administration, the private sector, and in the non-profit NGO sector.

This is a full-time program worth 180 ECTS credits (equivalent to 90 US credits). The standard time of completion is 3 years. Graduates receive a dual-accredited bachelor’s degree and they may use either the Czech “Bc.” or the American “B.A.”
