The Horticulture extended diploma course is suitable for students who want to gain a broad knowledge of the many areas of horticulture or for those who have studied at Level 2 and want to build on their skills. You can specialise in certain sectors, depending on the optional modules you choose. The course can lead to degree level study or a career in an entry level management position.
The central subjects covered in the Horticulture first year include plant and soil science, ornamental plants, amenity turf, machinery operations, estate skills, business management, work experience over the summer and an investigative project of your own.
In the second year Horticulture students will study retail merchandising, plant propagation, site surveying and levelling etc, landscape restoration, advanced horticultural science, tree and shrub pruning and your choice of two special units for either sports surface management, horticultural production, landscape maintenance and construction or landscape maintenance and design. There are written and practical assignments with some tests.
Further study: higher education qualifications such as Foundation Degrees in Horticulture, Landscape and Garden Management, Sports Surface Management or Arboriculture, and, if you’re successful, then on to a ‘top up’ BSc Hons Degree in Applied Horticulture.
