Study an MSc in Education and Child Studies at Leiden University
In the master program in education and child studies, students can choose a specialization in one of the sub-disciplines of education and child studies. All specializations prioritize the students’ academic education.
The master program in education and child studies is an academic program that focuses on the link between theory, research and practice. Students are taught to seek evidence based solutions to problems occurring in child rearing and education.
Students choose a specialization from the start. All specializations have one course in common, a course on the practice of empirical research. The rest of the year is spent deepening the students’ scientific knowledge in the field of their choice, doing an internship and completing a master’s project in which students carry out their own research and prepare a written report of their research project.
The master’s degree program Education and Child Studies is an academic, not a vocational program. It offers research-based knowledge about education and child development. Applicants need to meet the following entry requirements:
- Possess the skills, understanding and knowledge that are required for earning the bachelor’s degree in Education and Child Studies (Leiden University). This includes both substantive knowledge about education and child development and training in academic research methods and statistics
- Have earned the bachelor’s degree at a university not being a university of professional education, or demonstrate to meet the requirements for such a degree.
- Pre-master’s Students in possession of a bachelor’s or master’s degree from a Dutch institute of higher professional education may be admitted to the Dutch pre-master’s program in Education and Child Studies.
- Students should be sufficiently proficient in the language of instruction. Required for master’s specializations in English is a TOEFL score of at least 600 (paper based) 250 (computer based) 100 (internet based) or an IELTS test of at least level 7 writing proficiency in English at the pre-university education level. The tests and/or certificates that are accepted by Leiden University as proof of the required level of English proficiency are part of the International Code of Conduct and therefore legally binding; no exceptions can be made.
*This requirement does not apply for students who have completed their education in Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia, or students who are in possession of an international baccalaureate.
