The English as a Second Language course is designed for non-native english speakers who want to improve their english language skills. Okanagan College offers two distinct ESL programs designed to suit the student’s particular needs. English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is offered in Kelowna and the Intensive English Communication is offered in Vernon.
Both courses are offered in a variety of formats and durations.
Intensive English Communication Program - Vernon Campus
Focuses on developing speaking, listening and pronunciation skills, fluency and accent reduction and includes volunteer placements and field trips. Classes begin monthly and involves 20 hours/week of classroom instruction.
The course helps to develop strong English Communication skills that are transferable to the international marketplace. Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Levels offered every four weeks.
English for Academic Purposes
Kelowna Campus offers Six levels of English for Academic Purposes. Courses from beginner to advanced are offered in English Essentials, Reading and Writing. Programs begin in January, May, July, and September with an average of 20 hours/week of class instruction.
Students wishing to study the English as a Second Language ESL course must be:
- At least 18 years of age OR
- Turn 18 during their first semester at Okanagan College OR
- Have completed the equivalent of British Columbia grade 12.

Tuition & fees
Tuition fees for the English as a Second Langauge ESL program are:
- $ 1,100 per course (80 hour course/4 month semester); $ 2,200 per course (160 hour course/4 month semester) for the English for Academic Purposes Certificate
- $ 1,000 per 4 week session (1-2 sessions); $ 950 per 4 week session (3 or more sessions) for the Intensive English Communication Program
