The Research Masters in Literary and Cultural Studies at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands is an education progamme of advanced study in the arts, including music, film, theatre, literature, and multimedia forms. The Literary and Cultural Studies education curriculum aims to familiarise students with the theories, core issues, and methods of contemporary research on arts in culture, in addition to inter-media and inter-art relations. 

The 2-year Research Masters in Literary and Cultural Studies in Groningen takes a multidisciplinary approach, through which arts are studied from a theoretical, philosophical, sociological, economic, educational, organizational, historical, and critical perspective. Concentration on the aesthetic structure of art works and the functioning of arts in culture, society, and economics provides students with an overall and in-depth knowledge of literary and cultural studies.

Upon completion of the Research Masters in Literary and Cultural Studies, graduates may pursue a variety of paths within the field, whether a position in the public or private sector which requires a critical, independent, and analytical attitude, or further academic research toward writing a PhD thesis.

Admission requirements

Admission requirements for the Research Masters in Literary and Cultural Studies at the University of Groningen are:

  • an internationally recognized Bachelor’s (or comparable) degree in language and cultural studies (with a specialisation in literature, film and culture), American Studies, Arts and Culture studies (literature, film/television, theatre, music, multi- and new media), or in Art policy and management (for those with a Bachelor’s degree in (Fine) Art History
  • proficiency in English (min. 620 TOEFL or min. 7 IELTS)
