Foundation Course 2018/2019

The Foundation Course is a study program composed of two fields of study: Humanities (Foundation Course in Humanities-FCH) and Sciences (Foundation Course in Science-FCS), taught in English and primarily aimed at candidates who do not possess the minimum schooling requirements outlined in current legislation for enrollment at Italian universities.

Attendance of the Foundation Course is mandatory and students must accumulate all the credits provided by the course in order to obtain the final qualification.

The modules available within the Foundation Course are taught in English and a certificate of knowledge of the English language at a B2 level is required.

Foundation course study options:

1. Foundation Course in Humanities (FCH) - 60 FC cr

The modules are divided in the following way:

- Italian Literature: an introduction 12 FC cr
- Modern European History 9 FC cr
- Greek and Roman Archaeology 6 FC cr
- History of Art: an introduction 6 FC cr
- Introduction to Philosophical Thought 3 FC cr

The remaining 24 credits will consist of courses in the Italian Language and Culture to make up a total of 60 credits.

Registration cost: € 5,000.

2. Foundation Course in Sciences (FCS) - 60 FC cr

The FC prepares students interested in studying a degree program in Agriculture, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Maths, Medicine, Natural Sciences, Pharmacy and Physics. The content of the courses takes into account the admission exam to Medicine and the evaluation tests students must take in order to access a degree program.

Courses are divided in the following way:

- Basic Mathematical Language, Modelling and Reasoning 12 FC cr
- Physics 9 FC cr
- Chemistry 6 FC cr
- Biology 6 FC cr
- Principles of Economics and Management 3 FC cr

The remaining 24 credits will consist of courses in the Italian Language and Culture to make up a total of 60 credits.

Fields of study within the foundation course

a) Study option for candidates with 10 years of schooling - 96 FC cr (with the possibility of studying a total amount of 120 FC cr)

The modules are divided in the following way:

- 36 FC cr within the Foundation Course in Humanities
- 36 FC cr within the Foundation Course in Sciences
- 24 FC cr from courses in Italian Language and Culture

The study option of 120 FC cr must include a total of 48 credits in Italian Language and Culture.

96 FCCsregistration cost: € 7,500 (€ 5,000 by September 15th of the first academic year + € 2,500 by September 15th of the second academic year).

120 FCCsregistration cost: € 10,000 (€ 5,000 by September 15th of the first academic year + € 5,000 by September 15th of the second academic year).

b) Study option for “Native Italians” (i.e.: Italian citizens) - 60 FC cr

The modules are divided in the following way:

60 FC cr which may be chosen amongst the modules offered in both, the FCH and FCS.

Registration cost: € 5,000.

c) Study option for Italian native speakers or those who have an Italian language certificate at a C1 level (together with a diploma obtained after at least 11 years of schooling) - 60 FC cr

The 60 credits must be obtained by studying modules offered in both, the FCH and the FCS.

Registration cost: € 5,000.

d) Study option for candidates interested in taking “free-choice” modules

This study option is available to students who already have the minimum number of schooling years (12) necessary to enrol in an Italian university but who would like to fill in any educational or linguistic gaps they may have by taking modules offered within the FCH and FCS.

The registration fee is € 85 per credit.

Admission requirements

The Foundation Course is primarily aimed at candidates who:

  • possess a secondary school leaving qualification obtained abroad after 10 or 11 years of schooling;
  • possess an American high school qualification which does not include any Advanced Placements (APs) required for enrolment according to current legislation.

Candidates may also apply for the Foundation Course, even if they are in possession of the 12 years of schooling required for enrollment, in order to fill in any educational or linguistic gaps, by choosing single MODULES within the module list offered by the Foundation Course.
