Program Description

Visual Arts University of South AustraliaThe Bachelor of Visual Arts (Specialisation) is one of the University of South Australia's most prestigious undergraduate visual arts qualifications. It provides students with a studio-based education and a choice of eleven arts specialisations, each of which have qualified and experienced practitioners and lecturers, who introduce students to some of the most compelling ideas in contemporary visual arts practice. This education program is also the only one of its kind in South Australia to offer specialised art history and theory training.

Students at all year levels of the Bachelor of Visual Arts enjoy working in modern, well-equipped studios, with access to the University library with the largest collection of art, craft and design resource materials in the state. A program of guest lectures by visiting national and international artists provides students with the opportunity to further broaden their understanding of contemporary arts practice.

The first year of the education program introduces students to a range of visual, applied arts and cultural studies fields, complemented by the following specialisations: ceramics, drawing, glass, jewellery and metal, new media arts, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, visual art history and theory.

During the second and third years, students extend and consolidate their skills and knowledge as they specialise in the studio discipline of their choice. Students also undertake study in a number of electives to complement their specialisation, either from one of the above studio disciplines or from a wider pool of electives offered by the School of Art, Architecture and Design.

Students are also expected to undertake research, exploring both traditional and contemporary art techniques, as well as testing their ideas within contemporary practice. This is done through engagement with the art industry and exhibiting work through Adelaide's varied arts spaces. Students may also choose to gain international experience by participating in UniSA’s study abroad program and undertaking study at an art school overseas.

Further Information

As well as a high level of creativity and artistic ability, visual artists must be highly motivated, disciplined, and  committed to studio or theoretical practice. Students are expected to experiment with visual ideas, discuss their work and are encouraged to pursue their own unique vision. Depending on individual career paths, students might choose to develop other professional skills related to their practice. This might include developing a  wider understanding of business and management principles within the framework of self-employment and the ability to confidently promote their work through professional practice.

Who will employ me?

Bachelor of Visual Arts graduates may pursue careers as art teachers, photographers, computer artists (such as web page designers), jewellery and glass designers, ceramicists, painters, printmakers, sculptors, textile artists, or art historians. They may also become professionals in theatre, television, video and publishing industries, or pursue careers in galleries and museums as arts administrators or arts directors.
