The Bachelor of Environmental Science is a three-year full-time degree programme which is also available for study on a part-time basis in no longer than 7 years. It is a multi-disciplinary degree combining the disciplines of biology, chemistry, ecology and geography complemented with studies in environmental policy and management.
The degree program has a strong focus on aquatic science, chemical monitoring and environmental management and incorporates Environment, and Antarctic and Marine Studies theme areas. The degree also provides a nexus with research programs in the Schools of Chemistry and Geography and Environmental Studies within the University of Tasmania.
In the Bachelor of Environmental Science, students enrol in 2 majors, a minor and 4 student electives. The 2 majors and the minor are compulsory for all students and you choose 4 student electives:
- Environmental Management
Reversed Major 1
- Environmental Monitoring
- Aquatic Biology (BEnvSc)
This course specifically aims to provide students with competencies, skills, knowledge and awareness, which will prepare them for employment as environmental scientists. The program also develops a wide range of general abilities including communication, analytical and problem solving skills that are widely valued by employers.
Environmental Science Graduates of this degree can pursue careers in industry, government, private consulting firms, non-profit organisations and educational institutions performing duties such as environmental and natural resource management, pollution monitoring and environmental impact assessments, water and waster water management, and policy analysis and implementation.
Students wishing to study the Bachelor of Environmental Science degree must meet the following criteria:
TCE pre-tertiary Chemistry and Mathematics, or equivalent, including appropriate foundation units offered by the University of Tasmania.
