The School of Culture, Media and Society has created the “Global Studies in Japanese Cultures Program” to benefit students from all over the world who are interested in studying Japanese cultures in English at a top global university. Waseda University believes that “culture” is the product of rich linguistic, philosophical, spiritual, and physical heritages and traditions. The BA program will provides students with a deep understanding of not only contemporary issues, but also of the historical and intellectual lineages from which they have emerged.
Informed by the ideals of Ryusaku Tsunoda, the “father” of Japanese cultural studies at Columbia University and mentor of leading scholars such as Donald Keene, the broad and multifaceted humanities curriculum encourages students to build a robust foundation of skills and knowledge, interdisciplinary in scope, and considerable expertise in Japanese cultures, that can be utilized on the international stage.
The composition of this program is unique: it will admit up to fifteen Japanese students and fifteen overseas students, allowing active intercultural exchange on a daily basis, both within the classroom and during extramural activities. The bachelor program does not require non-native Japanese speakers to have Japanese proficiency for admission, but such students will study the language in addition to the program’s English-based coursework.
