Founded in 2004, The School of International Liberal Studies (SILS) offers a liberal arts curriculum taught in English. The aim of the department is to produce students who are fully proficient in English and Japanese, and who are also capable of thinking creatively and independently in an interdisciplinary manner.
The liberal studies curriculum covers the full range of subjects, from hard sciences to performing arts. The liberal arts courses are divided into seven thematic clusters.
Students are free to takes courses from any cluster. With a diverse, international student body, more than 1/3 of Waseda's students come from 50 countries around the world. In addition, every year the school sends more than 500 students to study abroad for a year.
The admissions procedure is similar to that of many universities abroad accepting overseas qualifications such as IB (predicted), SATG, ACT, GCE A Level, French baccalaureate, Abitur, NCEA Level 3, HKDSE etc. A good level of English is expected but no Japanese ability is required at the entry level.
